[Review] TRITTON PlayStation Kunai Stereo Headset

Mad Catz has released a new TRITTON headset for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, and that can be used for everyday audio. This is something I was hoping for since I tried my AX 180 a few months ago. The sound quality of TRITTON on the go. The question is, however, how is the new TRITTON PlayStation Kunai Stereo Headset? As I said in my previous review, gaming headsets have become the fastest growing 3rd party accessory for the 360. TRITTON has a rich history, creating gaming headsets for the 360 since its start. TRITTON also offers a complete line of headsets for the 360 and PS3, whereas other manufactures trying to enter this category only offer a limited range.

Not only are they designed to be aesthetically pleasing, TRITTON headsets are also engineered from the ground up to ensure optimum audio quality for gaming. The design of the Kunai is flexible, improving comfort and durability while keeping the classic exoskeleton TRITTON look.

TRITTON has taken a different route with the Kunai from their previous headsets. This time, TRITTON decided to make the Kunai an on-ear headset, rather then over-ear. The Kunai also features plushy padded earpads. The earcups rotate to allow the headset to rest comfortably around the neck when not in use.

The TRITTON Kunai features 40mm Neodymium drivers for clear audio with smooth bass.

The Kunai, much like its predecessors, comes with everything you need. It comes with the Headset itself; the detachable microphone, and; an audio adapter with an in-line remote.

Due to the fact that the Kunai can also be used for every audio, it can be plugged into any device that has a 3.5mm audio output jack, like, a MP3 player, phone, or computer, as well as the Vita. Setting up the Kunai on the PS3 is very simple. You plug the audio out cords into the audio adapter and plug in the USB into any port, then plug the 3.5mm plug into the adapter. Due to the fact that I'm unable to verbally communicate, I have no use for the mic, which plugs into the hole on the corner of the left earcup.

The Kunai comes in 3 color choices: mostly white with a black interior and details; all black with white details, and mostly red with a black interior and details. They all have TRITTONs T logo in gray on both of the earcups. As with the PRO+, the colors are in a gloss finish, making it rather eye-catching.

Even though, it uses Neodymium drivers like the PRO+, I was honestly a little skeptical about the sound quality of the Kunai initially, because it's on-ear, rather than over-ear (and because my Bose and other TRITTONs have spoiled me). However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it is very clear and powerful, even if it's not quite the quality from over-ears. The bass is very smooth and booming, but because the Kunai is on-ear, people around you can hear what you're listening to if the volume is too loud.

There is only really one thing I don’t care for about the Kunai. This is the fact that the headset's 3.5mm wire is short. If you want to use the Kunai for your computer, TV, or even something that's in your pants pocket, you will need an extension wire. This is by far my only complaint about the Kunai. I still wish there was an over-ear TRITTON for everyday audio, but that's an entirely different story.

Would I recommend the TRITTON PlayStation Kunai Stereo Headset? Yes, I would, especially if you want to experience TRITTON's sound quality without having to be tied to a console. With a MSRP of $59.99 USD, the Kunai is very affordable. A Nintendo version of the Kunai, compatible with the Wii U and 3DS is expected to ship this holiday season. You can purchase the TRITTON PlayStation Kunai Stereo Headset on the official Tritton Audio site.
